    Northern pike fly fishing

The Gouin reservoir is considered one of the best fishing destinations for northern pike, both in Mauricie, Quebec and North America. Its waters abound of this species which offers a fight offers and thrills of the most interesting for a fly fisherman. According to some, the Gouin reservoir, located in Haute-Mauricie, has infinite potential thanks to these multiple structures, bays and tributaries. Fly flies be ready!

Northern pike are a formidable predator that feeds primarily on fish (MFFP 2016). His diet also includes insects, crayfish, frogs, mice, muskrats and ducklings. This is why surface pike fly fishing is very effective. Reproduction occurs in shallow water in rivers, swamps or bays of lakes, where vegetation is dense (MFFP 2016). In the boreal zone, the cassander, various sedge species, alder and, in some cases, cattails and ribbons would be the main plant species that make up the northern pike spawning habitats.

Northern Pike are found in slow- or no-stream water bodies (Desroches and Picard 2013). It particularly favours shallow hot water areas rich in aquatic vegetation. However, adults, especially large specimens, sometimes find themselves in deeper, colder, vegetation-free water.

L’Aventurier will advise you so that your fishing and gastronomy experience meets your expectations. The meat of the large pike is delicious when well threaded and preserved.

Here’s what you can expect as quality fishing,
According to some studies here is the proportion of pike on the Gouin reservoir:

    • More than 50% between 21 and 28 inches (53 to 71 cm)
    • Nearly 12% over 28 inches (71 cm) and up to 48 inches (120 cm)

    Northern Northern Pike

The Northern Pike is one of the most popular predatory fish in the North. Combative, strong and persevering, it interests many fishermen for the challenge it represents. Elsewhere, it is considered a plague that devours other fish prized by sport fishermen, such as trout, bass, yellow perch and more.

The large pike can easily reach more than 1 meter and more than 10 kg

Colouring: Characteristic, pale spots on dark background (greenish to almost brown or dark grey); small golden spot on tip of scales; dorsal, caudal and anal fins spotted with black.

The Northern Pike likes shallow, warm and dense vegetation. Deeper and cooler water during the summer heat. Winding rivers with weak current, bays, lakes. Northern pike are frequently found during the breeding season in turbid waters of the floodplain in spring.

Northern pike appear to be more successful than muskellunge in habitats where they occur at the same time. It is a better competitor for space, food and spawning grounds.

Northern pike is an opportunistic carnivore that feeds on everything that is easiest to capture. His diet is mainly composed of fish (yellow perch, suckers, toads, cyprines, etc.), but he can also eat insects, crayfish, frogs, mice, muskrats and ducklings. The size of its prey can be as large as a third or half of its own size.

Northern Pike breed in the spring after the ice melts, April to late May. Type of spawning: Shallow water of floodplain with dense vegetation of rivers, swamps, bays of lakes. Northern pike spawn during the day. The female is mature at the age of 3 to 6 years and the male at 2 to 5 years. A large female is accompanied by one or two smaller males. No nest is built. Light amber eggs 2.5-3.0 mm in diameter are randomly scattered and attach to vegetation. Depending on its size, a female lays 3,000 to 600,000 eggs. Eggs hatch after 12 to 14 days. Motionless during the first 6 to 10 days, the fry remain attached to the vegetation by adhesive glands that they possess on the head.

Pike can be fished both summer and winter. The main techniques are fly fishing, trolling and casting.

    Enjoy the pike fishing!

    Walleye fishing in Mauricie
Walleye are among the most fished species in Quebec, for its abundance and especially for its deliciously delicious flesh. Walleye fishing is done mainly in the evening, at night and at dawn. Walleye are very active in turbid water, and this throughout the day. Walleye fishing is done with various lures, but since walleye are an amateur of surface insects at nightfall, it is also possible to catch it by fly.

    The walleye
Walleye are a large species of perch measuring 30-50 cm (0.5-1.5 kg). Its body is elongated and slightly compressed laterally. Its colour varies greatly depending on its habitat. It will have lighter markings in turbid water, but brighter in clear water. Its body is olive brown or yellow and has small golden spots on the scales of these flans, it has mottling on its first dorsal fin as well as large black spots at its rear end. There are also tiny spots in rows, regularly on its second dorsal fin and on its caudal, as well as white spots on the tip of the lower lobe of its caudal fin. Other features characterize the gold, it has big eyes covered with a pigment that reflect the light, which is why its eyes are silver colors. On the other hand, it forces him to avoid bright lights, but it gives him an excellent night vision. Walleye also has many sharp teeth and smooth cheeks almost devoid of scales. It can also be distinguished by its two distinct dorsal fins; the first spine (about 12-16 spines and the second soft-rayed spine. It also has two spines on its anal fin and at least one short and sharp spine at the tip of the operculum. *The colour from grey to blue is a subspecies of walleye, which is apparently extinct today.

Knowing your habitat, diet and reproduction will improve your walleye fishing practice.
Walleye tolerate ambient conditions, a species that lives in cool water, between 13 and 21 degrees Celsius. It is found in large lakes and rivers, but it is also found in smaller lakes, reservoirs and middle-current rivers. Walleye are found in great abundance, especially in the large shallow and turbid lakes (less than 15 metres). Walleye adapt more to their habitat than walleye. They are also more numerous and more widespread than walleye.

It has a rather gregarious behaviour. It feeds mainly on fish and feeds on what it will find under «the hand». It prefers yellow perch and malachigan. It also eats insects, slugs, leeches, crayfish, salamanders, small snakes, frogs or small mammals, it is also possible that it feeds on its own species ( cannibalism).

Walleye are voracious fish, they can eat a good fraction of their own size. In turbid water, walleye will feed all day. But in clear water, because of the great sensitivity of his eyes to the light of day, he will feed in the shallow waters and at sunrise and sunset. In shallow lakes, the optimal transparency that allows walleye to feed all day is about 1 to 2 meters at the Secchi disc.

    Breeding customs of gold.

Walleye breed mainly in the spring in river beds, shoals, waterfalls, and even in windy lakes, especially in shallow, oxygenated water. It also occurs in early summer (early April to late June).  The first reproduction occurs between three and eight years depending on sex and habitat. The male walleye will reach sexual maturity at the age of two years, or even up to four years. It will reach up to 280 mm long, while the female, larger than the male, will reach between 356 mm and 432 mm at the age of three to six years. Two years for males and five years for females in the St. Lawrence River.

The growth of walleye in Quebec is rapid, or slow. Some populations in the southern part of the province will grow before high sexual maturity, at least 85 mm per year, while the slower growing population is farther north, with less than 85 mm per year.

Walleye do not nest. Spawning takes place at night in groups of one or two females and two to six males. After the eggs are laid, the females will leave the spawning site and will be followed later by the males. The eggs are 1.5 to 2.0 mm in diameter and are released randomly. They fall to the bottom. Depending on the size of the female, they range from 50,000 to 300,000. Eggs hatch after 12 to 18 days. Walleye, especially females, are generally faithful to their spawning grounds.

The protection of the species, the walleye fishery must be protected!

Several studies have been carried out on the Community Wildlife Area of the Gouin Reservoir, whose mission is to improve the quality of fishing and to acquire knowledge on the various fish species that inhabit the Gouin Reservoir. A large experimental fishery was conducted in Quebec in 2002 and the results led the Corporation to implement various measures to protect the resource. The closure of walleye spawning sites for a period exceeding the official opening of the fishery, as well as increased monitoring by wildlife protection assistants, are necessary for the walleye population to allow any angler gilt, to continue fishing for a long time and allow our future generations to experience this sport! On that, good fishing to all!
